How
To Create Custom Permalinks
If you
are using a blog to generate traffic for your website you
may not be aware of a simple strategy that you can immediately
implement to get your content listed in the search engines
and improve your rankings in the results pages.
For
those that don't know, the term "permalink" stands
for permanent link and refers to the type of links that
you use for each post on your blog. There are many different
types of permalink that you can use on your blog but the
most common has the title of each post inside the link for
its individual page.
By using
a permalink that has the title of your post in the link
it will not only describe and identify what your post is
about, it will also make it easier for the search engines
to index your content and list it in the results pages for
relevant keyword phrases that relate to what the information
is about.
All
you have to do to is login to your blog and find the permalinks
section where you can select the "custom permalinks"
option in order to change the link structure of your blog.
If you are using Word Press you can find this section under
the options tab of the control panel when you login.
After
you have chosen the custom permalinks option you will just
need to enter which type of link structure you want for
your blog by entering a specific tag such as /%postname%/
which will use the title of each post for the link. Its
best not to use the category in your links because you may
want to list some of your posts in multiple categories which
can complicate things and slow down the performance of your
blog.
Once
you have done this you just need to click the update button
and you will be given a few lines of code that you will
need to insert into a .htaccess file in the folder where
your blog is located. All you have to do is login to your
website hosting account and go to the Web Shell area where
you can click on your blog folder and create a new file
called .htaccess and copy and paste the code into it.
If you
prefer you can do it the other way round by creating the
.htaccess file in your blog folder first and making it writable
using CHMOD 666 (or checking the boxes next to "write").
This will allow your blog to edit the file itself when you
choose the custom permalinks option so you will not have
copy and paste the code manually. After you have done this
just remember to change the .htaccess file back to the previous
writable settings (CHMOD 644) to protect it from being edited
by any visitors to your blog.
