Micro
Blogging Explained
The
term "micro blogging" refers to a form of blogging
that allows users to write brief text updates about what
they are doing and send them to friends or interested observers.
These updates can either be viewed by anyone or a select
group of individuals that have been specifically chosen
by the user.
From
a marketing perspective, micro blogging can be used by bloggers
to notify people about new content on their blog or any
other content that their followers will be interested in.
It can also be used to promote a new website and build anticipation
for a product launch.
By far
the most popular micro blogging service is called Twitter
which was launched back in July 2006 and has continued to
grow at a phenomenal rate. It allows you to build a loyal
following of readers who are interested in the same topic
so that you can instantly update them about what you are
doing.
Because
each update is short and to the point, it allows users to
quickly scan each message and find information which they
will be interested in. Its particularly useful for keeping
up to date with multiple blogs and following their activity
in one central location instead of having to visit each
website separately.
By following
popular blogs in your niche using Twitter, you will start
to attract some of their followers who may decide to follow
your blog as well if the information you provide is relevant.
This is a great way to quickly build a following of readers
who may be interested in what you have to offer.
There
is also a great free service called Twitter
Counter which allows you to place a widget
on your blog that displays the number of followers that
you have (similar to how Feed Burner can be used to display
the number of email and RSS subscribers that you have).
This helps to show how popular your blog is and will also
attract more followers.
Although
micro blogging is a great way to generate free traffic and
build a loyal following, it should also be used together
with other social networking services as part of an overall
strategy. Many Twitter users will be using services such
as My Blog Log and Blog Catalog so they may decide to follow
you on there as well.
